Artistic Mother tote bag

A bag that I made for my book, the Artistic Mother, has not only been my poetry tote, it has become my trusty everyday tote too. Yes, I always carry my journal and pen; but it also holds my wallet, keys, phone, sugar free sours and a diaper. It is the perfect size for quick trips. I have quit lugging a diaper bag around, instead I leave it in the car as a back up (with change of outfits, tons of diapers, wipes, toys and so on) and take my tote with essentials. Then if I need my diaper bag I just pop the tote inside.
Apart from the size being perfect for what actually need, I like using something that I made, something a little different, something that announces that I am part of the mixed media world.

I hope that if you have made a poetry journal you consider using it for everyday use too!

  1. Shona, this is so fun to see! I love my tote (even more so because I had a slight fear of sewing before making it) and bring it everywhere. Very handy! Made one for my 3 year old daughter too (correction- she ordered me to make her one!) and she brings that along whenever we go out! They are definitely in use all the time.

  2. Hi Shona! I recently discovered you and I just ordered your book on Amazon (still awaiting its arrival!) Is the pattern/tutorial for this tote in the book? I'd love to make one!

  3. I truly love my tote! I made a second one with 16 squares and it is a perfect size for my composition notebook! I am itching to make more as gifts.

I look around my home and see so many artistic touches inspired by your book! Now that I am back from vacation, I am ready to dive into the next project :)

  4. Shona,
I love that bag and you are smart not to lug all that stuff around with you. The bag is cute and I bet you get a lot of comments and compliments when you use it.

  5. It really is the perfect size to carry just a few essentials so as not to be burdened with a large bag.

  6. I have been looking forever for that perfect size, perfect style, perfect personalitied bag. The one you have is perfect!

I also would like to know if the pattern is in your book. My budget allows me a new book only so often. Your book is waiting patiently on my "purchase" list.

Since I haven't been able to buy it for myself or get my hands on a copy, I went to my local library and had them order one for their shelves!!! I am so excited because I get to be the first to check it out :)

I'm even more excited at the possibility your little bag could be in there with "how-to" instructions. I don't know how to sew but I'm not afraid to try anything!

  7. I quit carrying the diaper bag too in favor of a satchel. My children are older now. I do have a funny story about the time our second youngest was 6 weeks old, we were anitquing (far from the car)at a down town flea market and we forgot the diapers.....had to use paper towels and a plastic grocery bag!!!! Poor little baby.
