Workshop Wednesday

I am still only learning how to do video. It made sense to start at the very beginning and do a quick video for you on how I make painted and stamped background papers. Back in March I did a photo tutorial on the same subject, so while this is pretty much the same information it is fun to see it in video form. I would like to get quicker at making these. The whole process was 4 hours from making the video to editing it, not including stoppage time to take care of the kids!

I use my painted backgrounds for so many things. It is a good prep step for mixed media work.

Making painted and stamped background papers from Shona Cole on Vimeo.

Note on the video: In case it is not clear I worked on 2 sheets at the same time and show me painting both of them. The colors I used were: Purple Cow by Americana, Metallic Gold by Ceramcoat (I refer to it as bronze in the video at one point!) and Baby Pink by Anita's - all cheap craft paints from my local craft store, Hobby Lobby.

I hope you enjoyed that! Let me know what you thought - is the video too long? hard to see/grainy? Did I leave out any details? I plan to do some more videos, so any feedback would be helpful.

I did another tutorial video over on CRESCENDOh, this one is about 2 minutes long and is on 'making rubber stamps your own'

It isn't apparent, but I did that whole video with my 11 month old on my back, thanks to my Ergo. He was lulled to sleep by my movement and talking!

  1. The video was great! I think you were pretty clear about what was happening.

My husband & I also have the same parenting beliefs.

    Have a great day Shona

  2. I thought it was great.

The pace was good and it was easy to follow. Many times when I watch a tutorial, I'll have to pause and go back because they go too fast.

Thanks for sharing the details in regard to timing. That was good to know as well.

    I look forward to more.

    Blessings,
    Terri

  3. The video was perfect. I love that you're wearing your baby while making it. Have a wonderful day and I look forward to your next blog update!

  4. I too liked the length because it wasn't too fast. I just returned from a workshop on making background papers with art tissue and fluid acrylics. So much fun and like you said, "just fun." Liked the ending with music, it indicated the end was coming. Some instruction videos have all music and that's a bit distracting. Keep these up! Good job.

  5. Great first time video, Shona! I'm with the others- the pacing was just perfect, and clear instructions too. Great! And how cute is that last pic?!?! The artistic mother indeed!

  6. thank you all for weighing in folks!

Terri, you are right about the pacing on videos. I will keep that in mind for the next one too.

Family Valois, I see in your profile pic you have the same back carrier that I have! Where would we be without it?

Pat, I am with you, too much music can be distracting. I stumbled on this music in GarageBand, which is on my computer, it is has music shorts that go perfectly at the beginning and end of this. I think I will stick with that format.

  7. I think it was perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. You look like a pro. I'm with the others: the pacing and music was great, and it was very clear and so easy to understand. I got it the first time and didn't have to replay it. I think you could even use that same music for each of your videos. I got so much more out of the video than I do the photo tutorials. I would love to see more of these. I feel like I am right there with you. And if I forget, I can always come back and replay it.

  8. Thank you so much for doing this...I do realize the time/work involved..and how awesome to do it all with the baby attached to you..Nothing like having the baby close to your heart while you share your creative endeavors. I wore my baby in a pakpak..front sling...back sling or just at my breast...all while shopping..nursing or hanging her cloth diapers on the line...it was wondeful! Again your video is awesome!

Hi Shona my comment is so long overdue!I was in secondary school with you many years ago, stumbled across your blog a few months ago and I'm hooked! Meant to send you a message ages ago just to say Hi and how encouraging it is to see how Mums fit in time for art. Bought your book which is so great for motivating to keep creating when it's been a long day! I've never been good at art in the drawing sense but I've always loved making homemade things, knitting, embroidery, handmade cards, calenders, wedding invitations etc. Watched your video with my 7 year old son tonight (he actually heard you talking & was glued to it) we can't wait to make our own background papers - I have everything else just have to get the Gesso! Finally just wanted to say your blog is always so inspiring I also have two younger children and we all love arts n crafts (except for the cleaning up bit!). Looking forward to Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays! (Elaine McGovern (nee Dixon))

  11. Elaine, there is no contact info for you, so I will say hi here! So nice to hear from you, my goodness you may be one of the first people from Wesley to find me here!
I love that your son watched the video with you (I no longer sound Irish, do I?) my kids watch craft videos all the time with me. Today we watched one on making necklaces with diamond glaze, of course we had to make our own! That kind of energy is what I hope to have here, we'll see if I can keep it up!!!
You know on the gesso, white paint can work OK too, it is not quite as gritty or sticky or something, but rather than committing to purchasing a whole thing of gesso white paint will work. I am all about using what I have, fortunately I have tons as I have been 'collecting' supplies for years and each project really doesn't take much.
anyhow, thanks for saying hello! see you here again.

  12. The video is just perfect, Shona. I can actually watch through this without stopping and starting anew. AND - I need to start those background papers! It looks like so much fun, and you can NEVER have enough paper! Thank you, I look forward to more Wednesdays!

Thanks you so much for taking the time to do a video. I enjoyed it very much. I'll be maknig some background paper myself now. You did a great job with the video. I liked the music intro and closing. The length of the video was just right and your instructions very easy to follow and understand.
